A chair that rocks.
You will spend hundreds of hours in this chair. If you can, sit in one before buying. Prioritise arm height; it holds the baby up.

7 picks · Furniture and small things that make the room work.
A nursery needs fewer things than Pinterest suggests, and two deserve real thought. The glider, because you will spend hundreds of hours in it and arm height actually holds the baby up. Sit in one before buying if you possibly can. And the dresser, because a dedicated changing table is useless within two years while a dresser with a removable change topper stays furniture forever. Everything else is small: three crib sheets rather than two — one on the bed, one in the wash, one for the 2am change — and a night light warm and dim enough to change a diaper without convincing anyone it is morning.

Warm, dim, no blue.
Enough light to change a diaper, not enough to convince anyone it is morning. Warm colours only; blue light is the one that wakes people up.

A place for dirty clothes.
The volume of baby laundry is surprising. A hamper in the room beats a growing pile on the floor.

Advice that came up again and again — the practical things nobody puts on a box. Where a count is shown, it is how many separate parents independently gave that same advice.
Layer protector, sheet, protector, sheet
When the diaper leaks at 3am, pull off the top sheet and protector together. The dry set is already on. The waterproof layer stops moisture reaching the lower sheet, so you skip a full remake.

Skip the table and use a portable changing pad
You change diapers all day and night, so bring the pad to the baby. A foldable, wipeable pad protects beds, sofas, and floors, and saves space and money versus a fixed piece of furniture you’ll quickly outgrow.

Skip crib bedding sets; buy fitted sheets
Bumpers, quilts, and pillows are not safe in the crib. You only use a fitted sheet. Sets waste money. Get 3–4 sheets so you can swap fast when one is in the wash
Fit a waterproof mattress protector before birth
If your water breaks in bed or you bleed postpartum, the membrane blocks fluid from soaking the mattress. You strip the sheet and wash it, not pay for a deep clean or a replacement at 3am.
Always buy a new crib mattress
Mattresses age and absorb moisture. A new, firm mattress guarantees known history, tight fit, and clean materials, avoiding hidden mould, sagging, or gaps that increase suffocation risk when you reuse a secondhand crib or basket.
A crib with a firm mattress, a dresser with a change pad on top, a comfortable chair, a sound machine, a dim night light and a hamper. Everything else — the shelving, the mobile, the decor — is for you, which is fine, but it is not the checklist.
Three, minimum. One on the mattress, one in the wash, and one in the cupboard for the middle of the night. Layer protector, sheet, protector, sheet so a 2am blowout means stripping one layer, not remaking a bed.
Aim for 16–20°C (68–72°F). Overheating is a safe-sleep risk; err cooler and adjust the sleep sack’s TOG rating rather than the thermostat.
Not strictly, but most people want one. Dedicated-screen monitors don’t depend on your wifi and aren’t exposed to the internet the way an app-only camera is. That’s the main reason to prefer them.
